I had every intention of writing this week about scams, stunts, and hoaxes, because between that reality TV producer on Twitter and Amazonian drones, the examples were almost irresistible.

Almost.

Then I recalled what my dad told me repeatedly when I was growing up:

If each person on earth just did right, there wouldn’t be any problems in the world.

Now, dad used to pull this one out to counter my immense angst at everything from the gas crisis to wars in far-off lands. What he meant, of course, is that I couldn’t control the actions of anyone else, but rather could only choose to do the right thing at any given moment myself.

Smart guy, my dad.

So instead of giving yet more airtime to hoaxes and stunts that are doing quite fine without my participation, I want to draw your attention to this.

I’ve known Ben LeRoy for a few years now, and he is one of the finest individuals I have the privilege to call a friend. Why? It’s simple. He cares. He acts. He makes this crazy old world make sense by spreading love. Not fear. Always.

Around the holidays, he springs into action, and this year he’s giving us all the opportunity to both avail of his kindness and participate in spreading it. It’s simple, really: he’s made a list of stuff. Anyone who needs something on list for themselves or as a gift has only to raise a virtual hand, and it will be sent to them, free of any charge or obligation.

Go read the post on Ben’s website. Read the comments. See that people need things for their families, and other people are raising their hands to help. This isn’t about judgment or empowerment or politics or religion or consumerism. It’s about humanity. It’s about the fact that every single one of us has the power to do right.

Please join me in following Ben’s lead. If you need something, speak up. If you can give, say the word.

Thank you.
